The "Seminar on New Processes, Standards, and Applications for Rare Earth Modified Seamless Steel Pipes" was held on July 16, 2026, in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. The event was organized by the Science and Technology Innovation Working Committee of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) and co-hosted by Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Union Co., Ltd. and the Metallurgical Science and Technology Development Center.

The seminar highlighted the role of rare earth elements—a strategic Chinese resource—in improving the corrosion resistance and toughness of steel pipes. CISA Vice President Li Yiren emphasized that developing rare earth modified steel pipes is a key path to reducing reliance on imported materials such as nickel and chromium. He also noted that the technology supports the industry’s shift from “volume expansion” to “value creation.”

In response to overcapacity in the seamless steel pipe sector, experts called for a strategic shift toward high-quality development. Key priorities include controlling production capacity, launching new products, improving quality control, and reducing costs. The event also included technical exchanges between research institutes and end-users in the oil, gas, and marine engineering sectors.
